Government legislation last year removed a requirement that the commission consider municipal boundaries in crafting new ridings

Two Alberta cabinet ministers are encouraging the Electoral Boundaries Commission to take advantage of changes the United Conservative Party (UCP) government introduced last year that could result in ridings stretching beyond city boundaries to include neighbouring rural communities.

Last November, the province introduced legislation to increase the number of MLAs from 87 to 89. In March, the new members of the independent commission were announced, and they began their work of reviewing the province’s electoral map.
