A Canadian appeals court has upheld a ruling that Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) must pay compensation to the families of those killed in the downing of Flight 752 in Iran on January 8, 2020. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, was shot down by two Iranian surface-to-air missiles just minutes after takeoff from Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran. All 176 people on board, including 167 passengers and 9 crew, were killed in the incident.
The appeals court dismissed UIA's bid to overturn a 2024 ruling in which Ontario's Superior Court of Justice found UIA negligent in allowing Flight 752 to take off from Tehran. The ruling exposes the airline to significant liability through payouts to the families of victims. It should be noted that the Canadian ruling is a separate
