CHICAGO -- Rookie starter Troy Melton led a quartet of Detroit Tigers pitchers to a two-hit shutout Wednesday afternoon in a 1-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field.

The Tigers (70-52) took two of three from the White Sox (44-77) and have won two series in a row.

Melton was perfect through four innings, and when Luis Robert led off the fifth with a double, he bore down and struck out the next three batters. The right-hander threw only 56 pitches over five innings, but that was more than expected. The initial plan was for Melton to go two or three before giving way to a fully rested Sawyer Gipson-Long in relief.
