The Jackson City Council has approved a new ordinance banning ski masks, commonly referred to as “shiesty” masks, in public areas within the city.

The regulation, passed Tuesday, prohibits individuals from entering, appearing in, or being present in any outdoor public space while wearing a mask. The measure specifically targets ski masks and similar face coverings, but includes exemptions for those wearing masks for health, employment, or religious purposes.

City officials say the ordinance is intended to address safety concerns and deter criminal activity.

Before the ban is enforced, the Jackson Police Department will conduct officer training and develop policy guidelines for implementation.
