The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a recent increase in thefts from unsecured, standalone mailboxes.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, several reports have been received of thieves taking outgoing checks from mailboxes, then altering or depositing them for personal gain.

“Residents should use secure USPS drop boxes or take outgoing mail directly to the post office, especially when sending checks or sensitive items,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

The agency also advised people to collect incoming mail promptly and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.

The Sheriff’s Office urged the community to work together to reduce victimization.
