MONTICELLO, Iowa (KCRG) - People are remembering a pilot who died in a plane crash on Monday in Monticello.
James (Jim) Rohlf was flying his T-28B airplane from the Vietnam War era when he reported engine trouble shortly after leaving the Monticello Regional Airport. He was returning to the airport when his plane went down.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident.
Rohlf was a member of Trojan Thunder - a team of pilots that perform in air shows all across the country.
“He flew a lot. He was a very good aviator. Very knowledgeable, read a lot about aviation,” Rohlf’s longtime friend and fellow pilot, Paul Walter said.
Walter and Rohlf flew together for more than 20 years.
Just last month the two flew in one of the largest shows in the country.
