RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Off Kingsland Road in Henrico, tucked away behind trees and cornstalks, sits a piece of American history.
It’s where the Battle of New Market Heights took place, when three brigades of U.S. Colored troops broke through Confederate defenses. Fourteen of those soldiers received Medals of Honor for their actions.
“We are talking about 1864, where African Americans have been given the ability to fight for the United States Army and they are fighting for the freedom of those who have not yet been freed,” Julian Charity said, the Division Director of History, Heritage, and Natural Resources for Henrico County Parks and Rec.
The historical site rarely receives visitors due to it’s inaccessibility, but that could soon change.
