CHICAGO — An Illinois judge has ruled against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in his case to force authorities to bring Texas House Democrats back to the Lone Star State.
The judge ruled that Paxton had failed to present a “legal basis for the court to obtain subject matter jurisdiction over this cause of action” and that the court does not have “subject matter jurisdiction.”
Paxton had asked the Illinois court to enforce the arrest warrants against Democratic lawmakers who had left the state in order to delay a vote on new congressional maps for Texas. The rare mid-decade redraw of the congressional maps was pressured by President Donald Trump, who has mentioned wanting five new Republican seats in the U.S. House to shore up the majority.
