On Tuesday, Aug. 14, 1945, New York’s Yankees were traveling from Detroit to St. Louis to begin a four-game series against the Browns; Detroit’s Tigers had the day off awaiting arrival of Washington’s Senators to open a similar series.

Also idle were Philadelphia’s Athletics traveling to Cleveland, and Chicago’s White Sox, who awaited Boston’s Red Sox.

St. Louis’ Cardinals beat Brooklyn’s Dodgers, 2-1; Harry “The Cat” Brecheen beat Ralph Branca.

Pittsburgh beat Boston’s Braves, 7-5 in 10 innings with Fritz Ostermueller earning the win against Don Hendrickson in the first game; the Pirates won the nightcap, 6-2, as “Boom-Boom” Beck outdueled Al Javery.
