BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Bakersfield Police Chief Greg Terry said the death of 8-year-old Genesis Mata is one of the most horrific cases the department has ever seen.

Terry joined 17 News at Sunrise to talk about recent tragedies, including Genesis' death and the fatal shooting on Rhone Drive.

"This is one of the most horrific cases our investigators have ever had to deal with," Terry said about Genesis. "But the job of the police officer is exposure to trauma in a variety of different ways, every single day."

Genesis was found dead in a bathtub in a motel room on Aug. 2. Ray Mata Jr. and Graciela Bustamonte, Genesis' father and stepmother, are accused of torturing Genesis over the course of two days by pouring boiling water on Genesis and crushing her hand, according to court docu
