Luca Pellegrini pitched a one-hitter and struck out 11 in six innings as the Fairfield National Little League team won its first game in the Little League World Series, 1-0, over Richmond, Texas, in Williamsport, Pa.
Fairfield scored its only run in the fifth inning. Dante Madera walked, advanced to second on a throw and scored on a single to center by Ben Herbst.
Richmond starting pitcher Shane Grawe struck out 11 and gave up two hits and one run in five innings.
Fairfield will play Hawaii in the second game on Friday at 7 p.m.
