A baby girl was placed in a Safe Haven Baby Box at Mehlville Fire Protection District Station 2 on Sunday afternoon.
This marks the second time the baby box at that station, which is in St. Louis County, has been used after Gov. Mike Parson signed a law allowing baby boxes in July 2021.
Missouri’s Safe Place for Newborns law allows a parent to surrender a child up to 45 days old without prosecution, as long as it is done safely to specified personnel, including law enforcement officers, hospital staff and firefighters.
Once the baby girl was placed into the box and the lid closed, a series of alerts activated throughout the station. The baby was immediately retrieved and taken to a local hospital for evaluation. The baby is safe and in good health, according to a news release from the M
