WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said he plans to ask congress for a long-term extension of the federal takeover of DC Police .

When the president invoked the Home Rule Act , he got temporary control of the District’s police for 30 days. To extend it any further, Congress must pass a joint resolution.

On Wednesday, the president said he thinks Republicans in congress will approve the extension almost unanimously.

"We're going to want extensions. I don't want to call a national emergency, but if I have to I will,” Trump said while speaking at a Kennedy Center event . "People are feeling safer already, I've had so many calls ... They were afraid to walk out, they're not afraid anymore."
