A serious nuclear incident in the highest risk category took place at a naval base on the west coast of Scotland earlier this year, it has been revealed.
The Faslane base, formally known as HMNB Clyde, is where the Royal Navy keeps all its submarines including nuclear-powered vessels and others armed with nuclear Trident missiles.
Figures reported by the Herald show a Category A event, the most serious type of Nuclear Site Event Report (NSER), took place between January 1 and April 22 this year.
It was the second time in two years an event in the top category has been recorded at the base, according to the newspaper.
A previous incident in 2023 was the first to be given the worst rating since 2008.
The Ministry of Defence has not yet responded to a request for comment.
