Hamilton had one of the lowest unemployment rates in Ontario last month, according to Statistics Canada.
At 6.3 per cent, the city’s jobless rate in July was trumped only by Sudbury and Thunder Bay, who posted rates of 5.7 and 5.2, respectively.
Hamilton’s unemployment rate hasn’t increased for five months.
On the contrary, it’s shrunk, going from 7.5 per cent in January to 6.3 in July — more than any other city in the province over that same span.
Of the 16 Ontario cities included in Statistics Canada’s labour force numbers Friday, only five had unemployment rates in July that were lower than January. Of them, Hamilton had the greatest year-to-date rate decrease of 1.2 per cent.
The story was similar in the employment rate category.
While most Ontario cities’ employment rates have e
