One thing the Dallas Cowboys have done all too often in the past couple of seasons is shoot themselves in the foot with costly penalties.

Whether that be false starts, lining up in the neutral zone, running into the kicker, you name it ... the Cowboys frequently haven't been able to get out of their own way, and it has been going on for years.

From 2020 through to 2024, the Cowboys have ranked first, ninth, third, and fourth in penalties, so they are among the worst in football year on year. And in the preseason-opening loss against the Los Angeles Rams, double-digit penalties again plagued Dallas.

So why have the Cowboys been serial offenders year after year? Head coach Brian Schottenheimer knows.
