Drivers on Highway 16 should expect long delays if driving eastbound toward the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, authorities say, while they address a hazmat incident in a construction zone.

A car drove into the construction zone in Gig Harbor around 12:45 a.m. Thursday and hit several vehicles and equipment, including a piece containing radioactive material, said Washington State Patrol trooper John Dattilo on X.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and was taken to a hospital, but was uninjured.

The crash poses no danger to the public, Dattilo said, but out of an abundance of caution, eastbound Highway 16 is closed while authorities take measurements from the radioactive material and remove it.
