A Breeze Airways flight bound for Los Angeles was diverted to Grand Junction, Colorado, on Wednesday after an unruly passenger caused a disturbance. The incident occurred on Flight 704, which took off from Norfolk, Virginia, at 9:17 a.m. local time. The flight landed in Grand Junction around 11:15 a.m.
According to local authorities, the passenger, who has not been publicly identified, was intoxicated and became agitated during the flight. He reportedly yelled racist slurs at airline staff while waving a skateboard. The Grand Junction Police Department stated that the airline crew attempted to restrain the man twice, but he managed to break free both times.
Breeze Airways reported that there was a physical altercation involving the passenger, resulting in minor injuries to one passenger and a flight attendant. However, police indicated that they did not receive any reports of assault or injuries from passengers or crew members.
Upon landing in Colorado, the passenger was taken into custody by Grand Junction police at the request of the FBI. He was subsequently transported to the Mesa County Detention Facility. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
In response to the disruption, Breeze Airways is working to provide another aircraft for the remaining passengers to continue their journey to Los Angeles. A spokesperson for the airline stated, "Our focus now is on taking care of our Crew and remaining Guests who have been unfairly inconvenienced by this unfortunate event and getting them safely to their final destination as quickly as possible."
The Federal Aviation Administration has reported over 1,000 incidents involving unruly passengers in 2025, highlighting a growing concern in the aviation industry.
