Passengers were evacuated onto the runway using emergency slides after an American Airlines flight aborted its takeoff in Denver on Saturday. The incident involved American Airlines Flight 3023, which was en route to Miami. One individual was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to officials.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the flight experienced a "possible landing gear incident during departure" and is currently investigating the situation. Flight tracking data indicated that the aircraft reached a maximum speed of 127 knots, nearly 150 miles per hour, before it began to slow down.
Audio from air traffic control revealed that the pilot informed the controller they were "aborting on the runway." The controller responded, noting, "You got a lot of smoke," and later added, "There was some flames, it looks like the smoke's kind of dying down a bit."
Following the aborted takeoff, passengers evacuated the aircraft on the runway and were transported to the terminal by bus. Video footage captured the evacuation process, showing passengers sliding down the emergency chutes. The flight was operated on a Boeing 737 Max 8, carrying 173 passengers and six crew members.
First responders met the plane upon its arrival at Denver International Airport. The Denver Fire Department reported that they extinguished a fire on the aircraft. Airport officials stated that six individuals were evaluated for injuries, with one person requiring hospitalization.
American Airlines confirmed that the individual taken to the hospital sustained minor injuries. The airline announced that passengers would be flown to Miami on a replacement aircraft later that day. The original plane will be taken out of service for inspection. In a statement, American Airlines expressed gratitude to their team members for their professionalism and apologized to customers for the experience.
