RODNEY – A man who died in a fire at his home in this rural community southwest of London is being remembered by neighbours as quiet, book-loving and content with a simple life.

It was just before 11 p.m. on Aug. 8, last Friday, when police say the blaze broke out at a home at 12467 Pioneer Line in Rodney, a West Elgin community of about 1,000. The home was destroyed and a 54-year-old man died, police said.

The property owner, who asked that his name not be published, said the victim had rented the home – part of a farm property – for the past 16 years and lived there alone.

“He was a good individual,” the landowner said. “It’s pretty sad.”

Neighbours identified the man as John, though The Free Press has been unable to confirm the spelling of his last name.
