FARGO — The countdown to kickoff is underway for defending FCS national champion North Dakota State. For the first time in program history, the Bison will head to the state of South Carolina to face The Citadel Bulldogs out of the Southern Conference.

The military college in Charleston is coming off a 5-7 season under third-year head coach Maurice Drayton. The former NFL assistant with the Baltimore Colts, Green Bay Packers and Las Vegas Raiders returned to his alma mater to resurrect a football program that hasn’t had a winning season in nine years.

“We were the worst program in all of FCS. No ifs, ands, or buts about it," Drayton said on the "Hot Mic with Dom Izzo" show.
