This "worst-to-first" phenomenon occurs when a team finishes at the bottom of its division one year and rises to claim the division title the following season.

Going worst-to-first has become increasingly common since the NFL's 2002 realignment into eight four-team divisions. Twenty-five franchises have achieved this feat since 2002, averaging approximately 1.1 teams per season.
