Lansing — Republican Matt DePerno, a lawyer who's facing criminal charges linked to an alleged plot to examine voting equipment after the 2020 election, formed a fundraising committee Wednesday to run for attorney general.

DePerno of Kalamazoo is a well-known figure in Michigan politics and has been an ally of Republican President Donald Trump. The filing suggested he's taking steps to enter a potentially competitive race for the GOP nomination for attorney general, Michigan's top law enforcement position.

DePerno was the Republican nominee for attorney general in 2022, ultimately losing to Democratic incumbent Dana Nessel by about 8 percentage points in November 2022 , 45%-53%. Nessel can't run again in 2026 because of term limits.
