Elizabeth Rose is a survivor of domestic abuse.

“I fled with $35 and three bags of clothes,” said Elizabeth Rose. “It became a very serious danger because he involved my daughter and I said I need to go.”

Rose found safety in the Harmony House domestic violence shelter, one of the many shelters the Urban Resource Institute or URI manages across New York City. She and her daughter were finally safe. But she was devastated that she had to leave her dear cat Bebe behind.

“My abuser was threatening to throw my cat out on the Brooklyn streets, “ Rose said. “I was just so scared and afraid for him.”

On her second day at the shelter, she found out she actually could bring her cat to live with her there. She got a police officer to escort her to go get him.
