GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — Even if you don't have any reason to be concerned, Allina Health experts believe it is important to keep up with regular mammograms.

Dr. Karen Hendershott, a surgical oncologist with Allina Health, visited KARE 11 News at Noon to share more about her recommendations.

People with breasts should get screened every other year if they are age 40 or older. If you have a higher risk of breast cancer, Allina Health recommends that you get screened earlier - and possibly every year.

There are different types of mammograms: screening, diagnostic, 2D and 3D. A screening mammogram is used to detect lumps or abnormalities and a diagnostic mammogram is taken if any abnormalities are detected. It is best to consult your doctor on whether a 2D or 3D mammogram is right for you.
