HARLINGEN —The school district is opening the new year with its fund balance standing at $28 million, a month after closing last year’s ledgers with $26 million in cash reserves.
This year, officials are combining the district’s general fund and food service operations based on a recommendation under the Texas Education Agency’s Financial Accountability System Resource Guide, Ida Ambriz, the district’s assistant superintendent for business services, said.
Under the new system, officials are combining the general fund’s fund balance with the food service operation’s cash reserves.
As a result, the district’s overall fund balance is standing at $37.2 million.
In an interview, school board member Ricky Leal said the food service operation’s fund balance was at $9.17 million.
