A Davie County man is facing animal cruelty charges after investigators found 13 underweight dogs and cats suffering from skin infections on his property, authorities said Thursday.

Donald Gray Payne, 76, is charged with three felony counts of cruelty to animals and seven misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals, the Davie County Sheriff’s Office said.

A Davie County magistrate gave Payne a $5,000 unsecured bond, and Payne is scheduled to appear Sept. 25 in Davie District Court.

On Aug. 6, Davie County sheriff’s deputies executed a search warrant at 837 Turkey Foot Road near Mocksville, the sheriff’s office said.

The deputies found 11 dogs and two cats on the property in what the sheriff’s office described as unacceptable living conditions.
