Tropical Storm Erin continues to gain strength in the Atlantic and is forecast to become a hurricane by Friday with the potential to bring rough surf to the East Coast, the National Hurricane Center said Thursday.
As of 5 a.m., Erin was located about 990 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph.
