LANSING, Mich. (WLNS/WOOD) — The Lansing City Council on Monday approved a budget to buy several "pods" from a Kalamazoo nonprofit to use them to house people who are homeless.

The 50 "ModPods" will serve as emergency transitional housing. They are coming from Kalamazoo-based Housing Resources, Inc., which bought them in 2021. The project fell through in Kalamazoo, first hampered by manufacturing problems and then trouble locking down a location. HRI announced in September 2024 it would sell the pods.

Lansing council members and representatives from the city's department of Human Relations & Community Services discussed the planned project at a Monday meeting. Leaders approved spending about $645,000, which would cover buying the pods and the logistics of setting up the program.
