JIM THORPE, Pa. — A sign on the front door of Carbon County Friends of Animals in Jim Thorpe is alerting people that the shelter is closed to visitors due to an outbreak of ringworm.
The shelter on West 13th Street is unable to take in new cats or fulfill adoptions.
"The last thing I want is people coming in here, being exposed to it, and then taking it home to their family and pets."
Shelter founder Susie Yaich says 50 cats so far have contracted the fungal infection.
All cats and kittens with it have been moved into an isolation room for treatment. It's an issue the cat shelter has been dealing with for several weeks.
"It's mostly brought in by kittens and you may not see the ringworm on the kitten when they come in because of the incubation period so they may have been here for 2-3
