RANTOUL, Ill. (WAND) — The Rantoul Police Department is warning residents of a check scam after someone got a fraudulent check in the mail.

Police said a Rantoul resident got a fraudulent check in the mail claiming to be from the Village of Rantoul as a lending institution. The check was made out for $199.

The village said it does not have a lending program of this nature and any similar checks received are fraudulent.

Some signs of a check scam include unsolicited checks, instructions to send money back, suspicious details and urgency to act.

Rantoul PD said anyone who receives a suspicious check should contact their bank and the police immediately.
