The south Texas coast is expected to see heavy rain over the next few days as a tropical disturbance in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico gets ready to move ashore, forecasters with the National Hurricane Center said Thursday afternoon.

The low-pressure system, which popped up in the Bay of Campeche earlier this week, has a 40 percent chance of forming into a tropical depression or storm within the next two days.

Regardless of development, the system is set to move inland along northeastern Mexico and southern Texas late Friday, bringing bouts of heavy rain and the potential for flooding. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott activated emergency response resources Thursday afternoon ahead of the incoming storms.
