A St. Paul woman died after being found unresponsive in Lake Vermilion.

The emergency was reported at 5:55 p.m., when the 80-year-old woman was found in the lake near Blueberry Island, with CPR started by family members.

First responders arrived on Blueberry Island and took the woman back to land, before she was taken to Cook Hospital by ambulance.

Lifesaving efforts were conducted but the woman was pronounced dead at the hospital.

She has been identified as Marit Smaby-Nowlin, who was in the area on vacation, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.
