ALBANY, New York (WWNY) - National Grid bills will be going up beginning next month.

On Thursday, the state Public Service Commission approved the utility’s request to raise gas and electric rates over the next 3 years.

The rate hike will increase a typical household’s electric and gas bill by $22 a month starting in September.

By the third year, the typical customer will see the bill climb by an additional $50 a month.

National Grid officials have said the increase is to cover inflation-driven cost increases, pay for infrastructure upgrades, and provide discounts to low-income customers.

In a news release, the PSC pointed out that the rate hike is much less than National Grid originally proposed.
