DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) confirmed the first case of West Nile Virus in the state in 2025.
On Thursday, HHS announced that the first case of the virus this year was reported in an adult between the ages of 41 and 60 from northern Iowa.
According to HHS, mosquitos across the state are testing positive for West Nile Virus, posing a potential risk for Iowans. The primary method that humans can be infected with West Nile Virus is through a bite from an infected mosquito.
HHS says the best way for Iowans to protect themselves is to use an insect repellant with DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, 2-undecanone, or IR3535. Additionally, Iowans can wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, as well shoes and socks outside, and
