An Oakland County respite care center for young people with disabilities — the only one of its kind in southeast Michigan — will close Sept. 28 after the state did not renew a waiver that allowed it to operate.
The Lahser Children's Respite Home in Beverly Hills takes in young people with autism, ADHD, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Down syndrome and more for as long as a few weeks to help give parents and caregivers a break, according to a news release Thursday, Aug. 14, from the Judson Center, the human services agency that operates the respite home. Lahser Children's is the only facility of its kind in Oakland County, and no similar respite center operates in Macomb, Wayne or Washtenaw counties, either, according to the release.
