WAUSAU − The Fond du Lac County district attorney has been appointed as a special prosecutor in the ongoing investigation of Wausau Mayor Doug Diny's move of the clerk's drop box in September.

Marathon County District Attorney Kyle Mayo announced in an Aug. 14 news release that because of conflicts of interest and to ensure full transparency and impartiality, Mayo requested the appointment of a special prosecutor.

Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney agreed to serve as special prosecutor in the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation's investigation concerning Diny's removal of the drop box Sept. 22.

The investigation remains active and ongoing with possible follow-up investigation efforts needed, according to the news release.
