Near the Institute of Peace on Thursday morning, AP journalists saw about a dozen homeless D.C. residents packing their belongings. Items weren’t being forcibly thrown out by law enforcement, but a skid loader was clearing an abandoned campsite hidden amongst a grove of trees.
Volunteers from some of the agencies around the city that help homeless people were on hand to help out. Yards away, several protesters held signs, some critical of the Trump administration.
Advocates expected law enforcement officers to fan out across D.C. later Thursday to take down any remaining homeless encampments.
Representatives from the Office of the Deputy Mayor of Health and Human Services set up a caution tape line near the Institute of Peace, where advocates are helping homeless residents pack their belongings.
The officials appeared to be giving people with items time to clear out, and removing abandoned items in the meantime.
AP journalists also saw a Metropolitan Police Department representative onsite, standing to the side.
