After several weeks of questions and brief debates, Helena city commissioners will go over their stances on flying the LGBTQ pride flag above city buildings Monday.

This isn’t an official vote, but it could open the door to a later decision.

City Commissioner Melinda Reed brought up the idea in June, shortly after Missoula adopted the pride flag as an official city flag.

Missoula and Bozeman’s pride flag adoption comes in response to House Bill 819, which restricts “politically charged symbols on state property.” It was passed by Montana’s 2025 Legislature and has been used to strip pride symbols from government property.

However, city flags are considered fair game to fly, and a city flag that happens to resemble the pride flag’s signature rainbow is a loophole.
