LANSING — Michigan could soon become the latest state to regulate non-consensual intimate deepfakes, digitally produced images or videos depicting sexual acts.
Advocates say that Michigan’s laws need to change to keep up with rapidly evolving forms of technology.
“What the legislation does is it outlaws the creation and dissemination of non-consensual intimate deepfakes — so images of your likeness doing intimate acts that are not you and that you did not give permission to have created,” said Rep. Matthew Bierlein, (R) District 97, Vassar. “And unfortunately, it’s actually not against the law to do that right now there — there is no legal framework for it.”
