Maryland judge rules Education Department violated procedural law in efforts to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

A federal judge has invalidated two Trump administration policies aimed at dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs within the nation’s schools and universities.

U.S. District Judge Stephanie Gallagher of Maryland ruled on Thursday that the Department of Education unlawfully threatened to withhold federal funding from educational institutions that continued their DEI initiatives.

The guidance in question has been on hold since April, when three federal judges issued orders blocking various parts of the Education Department’s anti-DEI measures. This latest ruling stems from a lawsuit filed in February by the American Federation of Teacher
