WOODFORD COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - For farmers, weather can pose all sorts of challenges.
This year, an unprecedented amount of rain in the spring caused hay cutting to be delayed significantly. This, in turn, over the next couple of months, could cause some issues.
For farmers growing hay, they need several days of dry weather to harvest in the spring. This really didn’t happen in the spring.
Beau Neal, UK’s Woodford County Extension Agent of Agriculture and Natural Resources, said it’s changed how farmers harvest hay this year.
“So that delayed forage harvest, that first cutting, and so that put all the farmers behind. That compounded and delayed them for a second cutting this year. But with that delayed first cutting, we’ve seen a little lower hay quality,” said Neal.
