WILLISTON — While rain unfortunately put a damper on things Saturday, the annual Chokecherry Festival on Friday (Aug. 8) had a great turnout.

The annual event, which was held at Davidson Park, is held to commemorate legislation which made the chokecherry as the official state fruit for North Dakota. This legislation was guided by sixth grade students from Rickard Elementary School and introduced by Williston legislator Sen. Stan Lyson and Sen. Nick Hacker. Senate Bill 2145 was signed into law by Gov. John Hoeven in 2007. The first chokecherry festival was held later that summer and has continued to be an annual favorite for the city of Williston.
