SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (WHNT) — The Scottsboro Police Department says retired Police Chief Ralph Dawe has died.

"Our department and community are deeply saddened by this loss," the department said on its Facebook page.

The department said Dawe began his career in Scottsboro in March 1989 as a patrol officer. After showing a talent for investigations, Dawe spent time in the detective division as a sergeant, lieutenant and then a captain.

According to Scottsboro police, Dawe was then promoted to major in 2002, making him responsible for all 71 employees in the department. He was appointed chief in 2006, a position he held until he retired in 2020.
