GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Two World War II veterans with a combined age of 200 years will serve as grand marshals for Monday, Sept. 1st's Greatest Generation Celebration Honor Parade through downtown Grand Rapids. The parade is a part of a week-long celebration commemorating the Greatest Generation in Grand Rapids.
Eugene Khorey, 99, and Maxine Lay Boeve, 101, will lead the parade honoring WWII veterans from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Sept. 1.
Khorey, a U.S. Army veteran, served with the 86th "Blackhawk" Infantry Division in both European and Pacific theaters, participating in campaigns from Germany's Ruhr Pocket to jungle patrols in the Philippines. After the war, he used the GI Bill to earn a teaching degree and spent 30 years with Pittsburgh Public Schools, where he helped lead desegregation
