COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) -Colorado Springs City Council is one vote away from removing the CPA requirement for the City Auditor.

The current City Auditor was appointed earlier this year without the certification, and Councilmember Dave Donelson says she agreed to earn it within two years. The change would make that requirement optional, if approved in a final vote on Aug. 26.

The proposal passed its first vote 8 to 1. Donelson cast the only “no” vote, saying the change could hurt the office’s credibility.

“I think it sends a less credible message to others that come to Colorado Springs,” Donelson said.

Councilmember Nancy Henjum supports the change, saying the current auditor’s experience makes her qualified to lead the office without the CPA designation.
