KUNIA, Hawaii (Island News) -- An arson prompts an investigation after a fire scorched part of the Kunia Loa Ridge Farmlands , threatening crops and livelihoods.

The blaze was one of three fire incidents reported along Kunia Road in the past three days, prompting concerns from farmers and nearby businesses.

Charles Donaldson, board president for the farmlands, said the flames could have destroyed acres of farmland that supply local markets across Hawaii.

“Every ridge over within the 854 acres, we have farms ranging from one acre to 20 acres,” Donaldson said. “This is their livelihood. If the fire was not able to be contained, basically their livelihood would have been finished — not just their livelihood, but everything that they’ve ever built in here.”
