OMAHA, Neb. —

The Omaha Police Department has struggled with staffing since 2020 — falling 97 officers short, despite increasing officer pay since 2021.

The 2026 city budget will give Omaha police officers a 5% higher salary than any other agency in the state — a continued effort to fight the staffing shortage.

Many have voiced concerns, saying that historically, increased pay hasn't resulted in more hires. However, Chief Todd Schmaderer said stronger recruiting efforts will help fill those positions.

Once a year, Omaha invites the public to discuss the upcoming city budget. The biggest concern this year: the Omaha Police Department receiving more funding.

Since 2020, the department’s budget has increased by 42%. Schmaderer said it's because they continue raising officer pay.
