President Donald Trump is lawlessly bucking the Constitution. He is withholding congressionally authorized funds, firing officials that Congress appointed and eliminating departments created by Congress.
Under the Constitution’s checks and balances, the president has 10 days to veto legislation. If vetoed, the legislation becomes law if two-thirds of both houses of Congress votes to override the veto. If there is no veto or the veto is overridden, the legislation becomes law. The president’s oath of office requires him to “faithfully execute the law.”
The Constitution does not allow a president to veto legislation that has already become law. President Trump has effectively claimed a veto right not authorized by the Constitution.
