NEW YORK (WABC) -- Erin became a "catastrophic" Category 5 hurricane in the Caribbean on Saturday and is expected to strengthen further during the day, the National Hurricane Center reported.
As of 5:00 p.m., the storm was 135 miles (220 kilometers) north-northwest of Anguilla with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph (255 kph). It is moving west-northwest at 15 mph (24 kph).
The National Hurricane Center issued tropical storm watches for St. Martin and St. Barthelemy and Sint Maarten. Up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) are expected, with isolated totals of up to 6 inches (15 centimeters), according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
The Government of the Bahamas has also issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the Turks and Caicos Islands.
